Allegheny Riding Camp

Founded in 1975, Allegheny Riding Camp was the first Grier Summer program.  Allegheny Riding Camp is our premier camp for girls ages 7 to 17 who love horses! In order to assure a personalized experience for every camper, Allegheny Riding Camp accommodates no more than 45 riding campers per session. We maintain an excellent staff ratio to provide a caring atmosphere for everyone. We have a rich tradition of teaching girls self-confidence through horsemanship. Our Riding Staff teach girls to realize their potential though horsemanship, friendship, and respect for animals.

Traditional Riding Program: Riding campers ride three hours a day...two activity periods...five days out of seven for the three week session.  Riding campers have a "riding test" on arrival day to determine the riding ability level.  Riding campers should have the proper attire for riding, including a helmet.  Jeans, T-shirts, and heavy shoes with heels or riding boots are perfect for lessons!  There are two Sunday morning, judged horse shows.  Riders with show experience can practice their techniques and riders who have never shown can learn how to! Proper riding pants, riding boots, jacket, riding helmet and shirt are appropriate for the Sunday, judged horse shows. A white polo shirt and riding gloves are optional.

Campers are able to participate in a number of activities that do not involve riding. A typical day involves opportunities to dance, practice drama, do some artwork and play a variety of sports. If you are an active child who enjoys friends, then Allegheny Riding Camp might be a wonderful camp for you!

Many campers ask if they need to bring their own horse!  NO!   During the summer, we average 55 horses in our stables, and the horses come in all colors, all sizes and many ability levels. Some belong to the Grier School and some come just for camp like the riding campers!  Riding instructors may have a riding camper ride several horses before a perfect match is made!

Campers participate in the Allegheny Riding Camp Exhibition Show on the last Friday in each session.  The shows start at 9am and end before noon.  Camp is officially over for that session when the horse show ends.  Campers who stay for more than one session may have a new riding test at the beginning of the next session.
